In general, Belize is NOT cheaper than the US (for tourists). Taxi’s, gas, and most booze, are actually more expensive. Gas was $7.50 USD when i was there.
Lots of “wild” dogs in Belize City. The quotes are because I don’t think they’re actually wild. People just don’t cage them like we do in the US. I say this mainly because they’re not all skinny like most 3rd world countries. Apparently, it’s common practice for people to give their leftover food/scraps to them. I’m thinking these dogs are living their best lives. For reals.
Credit CARDS ARE NOT TAKEN AT A LOT OF places outside of the main tourist spots & ATMS CAN BE FAR and FEW IN BETWEEN.
When I headed south (outside the jungle), I noticed A LOT of iguanas. Random, I know.
I went to multiple places that had large numbers of roosters…. in my experience, roosters don’t usually get along, so I was a little confused about this.
BYO TAMPONS
They use speed bumps (or inverted ones) as traffic control. Between those and the potholes, you can’t actually speed in populated areas. It’ll break your damn car. Brilliant.
When you make a phone call, the “ringing” sounds different. It sounds like you’re on hold with someone who doesn’t have music- you just here a beep sounds every so often….
Alcohol is served TO-GO! No shit

There are typically lines to use the ATM, at least in the San Ignacio area. And you have to swipe a card to enter the room, housing the ATM.
Just about everyone there speaks Spanish and English.
When they crash on the highways, they don’t seem to f*** around… or they simply don’t have towing companies used in the same manner we do. Cause every few minutes, you see a completely totaled and/or burned vehicle abandoned along the highway. And in the city, they are all dented. lol.
I work in construction, so I naturally was very attune to their traffic control setups for construction and such. I personally found (though I doubt anyone else will) it interesting that their signs and sign placement was all, pretty much per US DOT standards… though what you encountered wouldn’t be lol… For instance: You would see “Trucks Entering Highway” signs. Then run into a truck going 15 mph and just about took up both lanes. Or “Flagger Ahead” and “Bump Ahead” and then half the road was gone and no workers lol.
They have busses that go up and down their highways all day long. Those and the school busses are all contracted out to regular citizens who own old busses.

All the touristy stuff seems to have a local price and a tourist price. And its not something they hide.
You can’t buy just one ticket, generally speaking, with regards to touristy things. Even if you go solo, you will most like have to pay for 2.
The guy who owned the Airbnb I stayed at one night, told me that if businesses in Belize want to take credit cards, they have to put down a $5,000 deposit for as long as they accept cards. This is because so many tourists have used cards there, then stopped payment, claiming it wasn’t legit, that the credit card companies now require it. That’s why he didn’t accept cards.
Random fires break out on a regular basis all over the jungle. I saw one that had filled a little town with smoke, and no-one even seemed to care where it was coming from. ** I have a video I will upload as soon as I find!
There are police checkpoints all over and they change locations daily. If your white, they just flag you on 99% of the time. They don’t even bother. They are apparently in-place to deal with drug smuggling, among other things.
There was no time throughout my trip that I ever thought, “Gee, I’m kinda cold”.
DONT WIPE YOUR MAKEUP OFF ON THE RESORT TOWELS. Extremely frowned upon. This was through multiple experiences I came to this conclusion.
First, don’t drink their water. Second, no one will suggest you drink their water. Bottles of water will be provided just about everywhere. I say this only because I see comments/questions regularly concerning the water (as if tap water will be handed to you throughout your trip)
Sea grass smells like death.
People use horses as transportation on the mainland! And donkeys! It reminded me of Egypt, I love it! … More prevalent on the west side of the country.
You can drive across the entire country in about an hour and a half.
I was told multiple times, after arriving to Belize, by locals and tourists, that you could not cross over into Guatemala and return. They would not let you back in. That is false at least some of the time. I met two people who just did it the day prior to me arriving.
I visited some dudes house in Belize City and as soon as the sun went down, crabs started popping out of places – it was awesome!
They Have Memorial Day on our Labor Day, and they have their Labor Day on our Memorial Day lol
A lot of Belizean eat turkey on Thanksgiving! Lol
Golf Carts are the primary mode of transportation on the islands. Rental was $50 USD/day for me.
They pay a lot in property tax. I was talking to this dude who had built his own house there, so he didn’t have a mortgage or rent, but he paid like $700 or something a month (I think it was), just in property tax.
I’m fairly certain tipping is at the higher end of the scale when compared to the US.
Its about a $100 and 10 minutes to fly from Belize City to any of the islands.
It’s not scary to drive there. Just don’t be timid. And pedestrians DO NOT HAVE (or seem to want the right of way) lol. I say this because I tried to stop for many pedestrians, and they would just wait for me, and it seemed to F-up the flow of everything around me. It was awkward. Bicycles do, however.
The country is made out of amazing quartz-like rock! I think it may be called sandstone… anyways, I love rocks and it was hard for me not to fill my pockets full every time I took a stroll.
Belize City loves to Party! They have pool parties and shit that like the whole city will attend… I could hear the music a mile away and people were parking along the roads for at least a mile radius from this joint. It’s a Cray Cray! My newly acquired friend told me that years ago he bought a little speaker and started playing music at his house. So, his neighbor went and bought two, and played music louder… this went on and on until he couldn’t afford to anymore lol. Ergo – they don’t seem to have noise ordinances.
All the vehicles there tend to be either extremely shitty, and can’t go over 10 mph, or fairly nice to really nice… Not much in between…🤷♀️I don’t know what that means or why it stuck out to me.
Sand Fleas are little bitches!!
There is one gas station on the island of San Pedro.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha! Please, everyone listen and dont come to Belieze.
